SYSTEM AND ESSENCE

The single-family residential project was commissioned by Anima Incorporações, a newcomer to the market whose premise is to develop sustainable and innovative projects. The house is a "model" designed to exemplify the fundamentals of this developer and promote it on the market. As it didn't have a specific client, a standard, functional project was drawn up, devoid of very specific and personalized features, so that it would fit in as an ideal project for practically any family of 4 to 5 people.

The house consists of a covered garage for 2 cars, a living room with higher ceilings, a dining room, a kitchen, a laundry room, a toilet and a barbecue area on the first floor. On the upper floor, the house consists of 1 suite and 2 more bedrooms with a shared bathroom and an office.

Placed along the length of the plot, as a narrower rectangle in relation to the width of the plot, the house opens up to the morning sun and brings an interesting lateral relationship to the project, where the obligatory setback joins the house's garden and pool spaces. We find this very interesting, as at all times residents tend to feel invited to explore the outside space of the house and its gardens, strengthening the idea of a continuous and fluid architecture.

The choice of engineered wood as the project's construction system was fundamental to increasing the level of sustainability of the work. The whole project was designed to result in a dry, clean and very rational construction project, resembling an assembly process rather than a construction process, guaranteed by the industrialized and prefabricated characteristics of wooden architecture.

Casa Anima's entire construction system is centered on engineered wood, from the structure made of glued laminated timber (MLC) to the closures, all of which are made of woodframe. The logic behind the use of glued laminated timber allowed for incredibly fast, precise and efficient execution, with minimal waste and practically zero waste generation.

The project reuses rainwater for garden irrigation, solar water heating and, through photovoltaic panels, produces the solar energy needed for its full operation. Through a thermo-energy simulation, it was possible to make some important decisions in order to adjust the percentages of glass opening, the composition of the materiality of the envelopes, the importance of the correct use of internal solar screens, resulting in a house with the lowest possible electricity consumption.
